Not as many crossed off

Heyhey!

My to do list is not looking AS GOOD as yesterday's, but it's still better than usual! So. I'm feeling pretty good about that.

This morning the fire alarm went off! AND! There was actually a fire! Nothing BIG, but a small one in the laundry room, I think. At least, that's my theory. Based on where the smoke was coming from and such.

AND. A boy at gym mentioned Harry Potter, and I went all crazy on him. YEAH. It's what I do. But he was cool about it.

Annnnd. I cried when my dinner was not working out! It's a thing I do when I'm hungry.

AND THAT. All of interest from today, I think. And Mulan is almost over, so I'm going to need to be doing some more of the to do list. YEP.

DFTBA!

It's on my to do list...

Heyhey!

So today I am shockingly close to finishing EVERYTHING on my to do list. Except instead of working out, I just stretched. BUT. Details, details! ANYWAY. One thing on the list was blogging. SO. I thought I would do this so that I could mark it off for real!

The Derek project has been a bit of a fail. However, I plan on doing something for it after I finish writing this because it is ALSO on my almost completed to do list. SO. Yeahyeahyeah. AND. I do plan on continuing work on it through Christmas break or whatever. So, we'll see.

AND. Now I can mark this off of my list. haha

Propaganda

Heyheyhey!

I had to watch Triumph of the Will for history class. It is Nazi propaganda. It was not an enjoyable thing to watch. It was, in fact, creepy. Everyone like Hitler so much. And just...creepy stuff! ALTHOUGH. That mustache was ridiculous! It looked so dumb! That is what happens when you're a dictator, I guess. Everyone is too scared to tell you how stupid your facial hair looks.

ANYWAY.

I have a lot of homework tonight! BUT. I've watched the movie and read the stuff I needed to in my history book...so I am PREPARED for the in class essay anyway. And now I just need to do one of my English assignments in case she gives us a quiz. UGH. I am so sick of this semester's classes! BUT. ONLY A MONTH LEFT! Then finals! AND THEN DONE! Yepyepyep!

OKAY.

THAT IS ALL.

MUST WATCH THE REST OF THIS EPISODE WHILE DOING HOMEWORK.

Girls what's your weakness? MEN!

I just watched an Ellen stand up thing, and she quoted that line. It is from a song. And it was in my head when I was trying to think of a title.

Today was one of those days that NOTHING productive was done. Nothing is due tomorrow, and lots of stuff is do Thursday. So, naturally, I had grand ambitions to finish a bunch of my Thursday work so that I could have a bit of a break tomorrow, or at least a bit less stress. But, obviously, it didn't work out. Plans like that never seem to work out.

I did write a little bit more of The Derek Diaries! BUT. It's late, so I'm not going to copy anything onto here.

Best wishes!

November!

It is November. I like to state the obvious.

Obviously.

And. I have tons of homework! I am not yet done. I will not be done. It is a sad thing. BUT. Yes.

Chuck tonight was good! I am sad that I must wait two weeks for the next one though! And. The rest of my day was okay. There were some emo moments, but Mustard Seed (Bible Study) was good and cheered me up a bit. And, yes.

Now it's just homework. BAH! BAH! BAH!

Oh, and I did start The Derek Diaries! I have written one entry. I won't copy it down here because it's not that good. It was more to get myself going in the right direction and stuff. And. I have a little outline thing that I made during class the other day. Perhaps I'll try to flush it out a bit more in class tomorrow. Yepyepyep!

That is all for the moment, I think. I don't want to get super emo, especially because the more I talk about the stuff, the more emo I get about it. SO. We shall just NOT.

Bye!

Chuuuuuk!

Heyheyhey!

I'm watching Chuck right now. Third season. For the...third time? It's magical...haha. I'm on the second episode, and it's such a good one! Funny, but also with some EMOTION mixed in.

I went home over the weekend, which was nice. I rather enjoyed it. BUT. It was so short! I think I slept most of the time. Which, you know, is not so unusual. AND. I'm planning on going home again next weekend! Because my sister is in town for a PT school interview thing. SO THAT IS NICE!

AND. It's November tomorrow! Which means NaNo for some, but not for me. BUT. I will be starting the Derek Almonte diary! So. That's exciting! I'll transcribe some of it here when I have something that I want to share. AND. November is also the last month of classes! THEY END ON NOVEMBER THIRTIETH! It's so exciting!!! I hate my classes this semester. THEY SUCK. And. Harry Potter SO SOON! Yesyesyesyes! And! I sign up for classes on Friday! Which, you know, is exciting for me. Because. So much OPPORTUNITY there!

Okay. That's enough freaking out for the moment.

BYE!

P.S. Happy Halloween! I'm so sad that I couldn't go trick or treating this year. :(

I have a test tomorrow...

Yep. An economics test. I'm not very excited about it. BECAUSE. I'm afraid that I'm going to fail it! Well, not fail it. But I'm afraid that I won't do as well as I'd like. SO. I should be studying, right? I should, but I'm not. I'm watching Chuck and writing this blog post. YEP. Fun times.

And. On THURSDAY, I have a test in English! I'm going to have to catch up on reading for it because I'm currently two plays behind. But I HATE reading plays. They are so boring! SO BORING! And I always get the characters mixed up because I tend to just pass over them with my eyes. OH WELL.

I AM excited for Thursday after my test though! SWEET FREEDOM! Oh, yes! :)

Anyway.

Oh, hey.

Hello! Yeah, I haven't blogged in awhile. I've been busy-ish. And. Distracted. YES.

BUT. I was talking to the lovely Possum, and we agreed that we should both hop back on the blogging everyday wagon! So. I've climbed back aboard for the moment. We'll see how long it lasts.

The other day I went to a used bookstore. There were blank books there. As in, journals. I've looked at these before, and sometimes they aren't so blank. There's often a bit of writing in the front, which is extremely interesting, in my opinion. And there was this one Harry Potter journal that really caught my interest. First of all, the cover has shields with all of the houses on it, which is cool! But. MORE THAN THAT. In the front, there's this drawing of a boy. He has hair that sticks up, glasses, and ears that poke out. And then on the first page, it says Derek Almonte.

Earlier this month, I decided that I was going to do NaNo. But. Upon closer examination of my scheduled events (homework assignments that are due, trips I want to take home, etc), I decided that it'd be a really dumb idea. However, I knew that I wanted to do SOME TYPE of writing project in November. Even if it was just story planning, and a bit of writing.

And then I found this journal! I am going to fill it with stories about Derek Almonte and plot outlines for stories about him and such. It should be fun, I think!

AND. I'm going to copy some of them onto here for your reading entertainment. Because then I'd be killing two birds with one stone in that I wouldn't have to think of a blogging topic for that day. So. Coming in November. The tales of Derek Almonte! It should be fun. I've already thought of some stuff to do with him. :)

Anyway. I should get to my stacks of homework now. I've put it off long enough, what with this and Chuck. CHUCK WAS AWESOME TONIGHT, BY THE WAY. In case you were wondering. #fangirlmoment

Chuck Time!!!

Oh, hey!

I haven't done THIS in awhile. But. I am now! So. YEAH.

I am watching Chuck right now. Only it's a COMMERCIAL. I cannot TYPE while Chuck is ON. It requires FOCUS. Must admire Zachary Levi and Joshua Gomez from EVERY POSSIBLY ANGLE while it is on! YEAH.

And. Umm. Not much has been happening. Just school, a trip home, and other things. I started teaching my friend Dana how to do a handstand today. That was good! ONLY. I think we will need a few more LESSONS. Yeah.

Ok. I am going to CUT THIS OFF now. Due to the fact that I have a feeling that this commercial break is almost over! haha

It is Monday (as Julia pointed out).

Hello!

Today has been pretty boring. YEP. I went to class and did homework and went to Mustard Seed (Bible study). I AM trying to do EVERYTHING on my to do list today! This does not usually HAPPEN, so it's rather exciting that it's actually sort of working.

Oh. An exciting thing (if by exciting, I mean SCARY) DID happen today. I emailed the Environmental Studies guy about changing my major to environmental studies. This is STRESSFUL because it's all "life change in a single email" ish. And I'm not sure if this is what I want to do or not. I DO know that I DO NOT want to be in business, but I do NOT know if I want to be in environmental studies. I am too interested in too many things! I don't want to LIMIT myself to only one! What about history and English and psychology and everything?? I've got to IGNORE the OPPORTUNITIES to take classes about all of THOSE awesome things in order to take loads of classes in this ONE awesome thing. Plus, I think I really hesitate about the whole lawyer career path thing because dreams die HARD. People say it all the time, but it's true. I've always wanted to be an author, but I feel like it'd be completely impossible to find time to write with a career as a lawyer and the family I want and everything. NOT that I am even GOOD at writing! SO I COULD NOT BE AN AUTHOR ANYWAY. But it's still something that I've always WANTED, and I don't like to feel like I'm completely ditching it. It's funny because everyone has always told me that I can do whatever I want to with my life, but they are WRONG. I CANNOT do whatever I want with my life! I cannot do the thing that I MOST want to do with my life (besides being a mother). It's lame, I say! But it's alright. I'll still write in my free time. It's just never going to be a career. I just have to get used to that.

ANYWAY. My refrigerator is being VERY NOISY. I put in a maintenance request today, so hopefully they will SEE TO THAT tomorrow. Because, honestly, it's driving me INSANE.

Oooh. The guy emailed me back! I'm meeting with him tomorrow at 3. OH DEAR. *panics*

Ok, there are more items on my to do list, so I'm going to FINISH THIS OFF now. Bye!

A Lazy Sunday

^That's what today was.

I slept in and went to churh tonight instead. Most of the time I like to go to BOTH morning and night things on Sundays, but this morning just DID NOT WORK OUT. But I woke up at 10:30 and did my laundry before the machines filled up, which was NICE. I've noticed that I NEVER see boys in the laundry rooms even though my dorm is now co-ed. CURIOUS, indeed.

Other than laundry, I just did some homework and things. Nothing too productive. I did manage to slip in a little bit of reading for fun (All American Girl). I plan to do a bit more before I go to sleep because I'm not QUITE tired enough right now.

AND. Yeah. Another week is beginning! I'm getting sort of homesick, and I'd very much like to go home this weekend. We shall see if that comes to pass or not.

ANYWAY. I will go now. Bye!

Sometimes I Turn My Computer Off

Hey!

I HAVE MISSED TWO DAYS! Oops! I kept turning my computer off at night AND THEN remembering that I have not yet blogged. It's a fail, to be sure.

Last night was...INTERESTING. I had my first ever Krystals! ALSO, I had my first ever experience talking to drunk boys. Like, REALLY drunk boys.

Dana and I got the Krystals and came back to our dorm, where we sat on one of the bench swings outside. So we were sitting there and talking and these two boys came up. And one of them was all, "Can we SWANG with ya'll?" Thick Southern/drunken drawl there. I would have been all, "NO!" but Dana was like, "Sure!" So they sat with us, and the second one was like, "My hand really hurts. I can't swing." So he wove his way over to this little brick structure that surrounds these bushes and sat on it.

And then he started telling us about he had punched a hole in a car because some frat boys told him that his cargo pants were gay. And now his hand really hurt. At one point, I turned to his friend, and I was like, "Your friend is more drunk than you are." And he was like, "I handle my liquor better than he does." And then later his friend was all, "It's not that I'm a lightweight. I drank all summer." Like THAT was evidence. And then there were these girls playing ping pong inside, and he was like, "Oh, there's a girl. I'm going to go get her." And I was like, "Good luck with that." And he was like, "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!" And I was like, "Zach something" because I'd heard him say it before. And he was like, "I'm ZACH F-in WALLACE!" (last name changed slightly...haha). And...YEAH. There was some other stuff, but that's pretty much the HIGHLIGHTS!

Anyway. The football game was fun today, but we lost. AND there was a storm, which is always awkward. We had to go inside and things. It was hot inside due to many people and no air conditioner.

So. I'll try to NOT forget tomorrow!

Bye!

Nathan the Wise

The blog post title is the title of the play that I'm supposed to have read by 8:10 tomorrow morning. I am not done. And I am very tired. And I will be even more tired tomorrow when I have classes from 8:10 to 1:55. ALTHOUGH. I do get out of my first class 25 minutes early every week. SO. That's nice. I'll have a good little break there in which to eat breakfast. Or maybe I could sneak in a power nap or something. I don't know!

I DO know that I should go to sleep right now!

TIRED.

Hello!

I am TIRED. The tiredness all started last night when Dana stayed in my room until 3:30. AND we were supposed to meet to go to yoga at 7:30. AND I had to take a shower this morning. So I went to bed at 3:40 and got up at 6:40. I walked to the bathroom to take my shower, and I was WEAVING. I seriously COULD NOT walk in a straight line. I took my shower, and I got BACK into bed and texted Dana and was like, "I'm not going to make it this morning. I'm going to go back to sleep." And I proceeded to do so. I got a couple more hours in, which was nice. But I still only got 5 hours of sleep total.

And I just got back from the library, where I struggled through and got caught up on my Howards End reading. That was good because I was pretty behind.

AND. Yeah. Tomorrow will be quite busy with the homework. I DID go to the grocery today, so at least I'll be well-fed while I'm busy.

Oooh. Random story! I was walking back from the library a bit ago with my friends, and I TRIPPED and stubbed my toe on a rock (again with the not being able to walk when I'm tired!). And I said something along the lines of, "Ouch. That really hurt." And I sounded totally drunk when I said it, BY THE WAY. But anyway. I looked ahead, and there were these GUYS hanging in these hammocks that they'd strung up between some trees in front of the dorm. And one of the guys popped his head out of his and was like, "Are you ok? You just tripped." Which...umm...obviously I KNOW that I just tripped. That'd be like me looking at him and saying, "You're in a hammock." But instead of saying this to him, I just smiled and said that I was ok. I smiled because of the hammock thing, not because his clever witticism. hah

ANYWAY.

BED TIME!

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

I was almost hit by a couch.

Hello!

So. I drove back to school today, and I was almost hit by a couch! I will copy and paste my account of the experience from this thing that I wrote to my friends earlier today (because I am too lazy to write a whole new account).

Ok, so I was ALMOST to my exit to school. And there was this truck in front of me, to the left. It was pulling a trailer with a couch and a chair strapped in. I had noticed it earlier in the drive, and thought to myself, "What if one of those comes undone?" It was just one of those THINGS that you think while you're bored and driving to pass the time. So I was driving along a bit later and THE COUCH CAME OFF! And there was a BIG truck to my immediate left, and I watched it try to miss it with interest. It was in that sort of DETACHED way that comes when you're at the end of a trip and you're sort of in shock. Hmm. I don't know if that is an actual WAY since it doesn't happen that often, I guess. ANYWAY. I was watching the truck try to miss it, and then the couch started COMING TOWARDS ME! The thing was on WHEELS!!!! And it was seriously about to hit me! So I squealed and swerved slightly and SOMEHOW missed it! But I was afraid there was a car in the lane to my right that I hadn't seen and that I was going to hit THEM. But there wasn't, so it was ok. And then I teared up and MAYBE cried a little bit. Because, REALLY. What would happen to a person that HIT A COUCH with their car? What sort of accident would THAT cause? And how EMBARRASSING would it be to have your death be listed as, "Death by rolling couch." I mean. SHEESH. Anyway, I REALLY wanted to REPORT that STUPID person for not having their load tied down PROPERLY! I mean, someone could have been seriously hurt! And someone WAS seriously traumatized! I won't be able to drive behind people who have things strapped down anymore!

Alright! I need to get to sleep now because I'm going to yoga EARLY in the morning, and it is ALREADY early in the morning! Oh, dear. I think a NAP will be taken tomorrow!

Failing!

Hello!

I realize that all of my posts since I began this happy experiment have been complete FAILS! And this one is no exception. Tomorrow I will be driving back to school, and MAYBE once I'm THERE, I will have some GOOD blogs that are FUN to read or something.

...But as of now. I just want to take a book to bed with me and read until I can't keep my eyes open any longer.

So I'm going to go DO THAT!

Still home and distracted.

Hey!

It is still the weekend, so I am still at home. And I forgot to blog until now AGAIN. I am sadly forgetful.

Today was fun. We pretty much just hung out. Cooper (my sister's boyfriend's dog) and Toby (my dog) played together some. And we watched them do that. I've never really understood just standing around and watching animals for long periods of time. Which is why it was good that I had a book handy. I'm reading Work by Louisa May Alcott for my Women in American Lit class. I like it fairly well, but I was unhappy when I began to suspect that someone would be dying.

ANYWAY. I'm going to end this now even though it's really short AGAIN.

Easily Distracted

Hello!

I am HOME now for Labor Day weekend. I have this PROBLEM when I am home. I FORGET things like blogging everyday! While I'm at school, I set my OWN SCHEDULE. And blogging figures into that. When I'm at home, I'm part of the schedule of others, and blogging sort of gets LOST. Until late at night when I suddenly remember that I need to do it. Which is, you know, what just happened.

Tomorrow my best friend Julia is moving into school. GOOD LUCK, JULIA! I hope it is awesome and your roommate is awesome and the sadness is kept to a minimum! I can't wait to hear all about it, and I'll be thinking of you! :)

Blogging the rest of the year?

Hey!

I just finished up BEDAugust over on Maureen Johnson's lovely ning, and I decided that I did not want to give up blogging everyday. So I have decided that I will attempt to blog until the end of 2010. My good friend Possum (aka My Canadian Twin) has been blogging through the ENTIRE year of 2010! And I thought it would be NICE to finish it up with her and everything. PLUS, this poor blogspot blog has been terribly neglected by me.

What is up with me today? WELL. I have had TONS of homework. I STILL have tons of homework, actually. I need to write a very short essay type of thing (only one page). Plus, I'm meant to have read nearly 100 pages for my Modern British Novel class which I HAVE NOT YET DONE. As in, I haven't even STARTED. And there's TONS of FREAKING accounting stuff that I'm EXTREMELY behind on and can't possibly catch up on by tomorrow. I loathe accounting, and I have a very bad habit of leaving it until the end and then leaving it undone.

ANYWAY. I should probably get to that stuff. SO. Bye!

Too many books?

Hello! I haven't been on this blog for awhile because I've been doing Blog Every Day April over on my other blog! And two blogs a day seemed like too much work. But now it's May, and I've decided that I should use this blog MORE, as it's been really neglected.

I was chatting with my Canadian Twin about my huge number of books, and she said I should take pictures. So I did! And now I present those pictures to YOU.

^This is a picture of my NONFICTION shelf. It's sideways because I'm not a good photographer.

^This is what I call my CLASSICS cabinet. As it contains my CLASSICS. And my sisters' sparknotes.

^These are part of the books I haven't read. I bought them at the library sale in which it was five dollars per bag of books.

^Some more of my library sale books. I put them in my dresser drawer, Rory Gilmore style.

^Unread books that I didn't buy at the library sale. Meaning I actually CHOSE them with CARE. For the most part.

^A sideways picture of my unread YA books!

^Books that I've stacked on my closet floor. Many of these were given to me by my grandmother.

^On top of my book case. This picture shows my Meyer books and a Harry Potter poster book. Plus my HP audiobooks and my HP book set chest.

^This picture shows part of my HP collection, part of my chest, and (in that clear plastic thing) my audiobooks OTHER than Harry Potter.

^Still on top of the book case. The rest of my Harry Potter collection!

^INSIDE the book case. The bottom shelf. I have read these books. I need to organize them. The whole book case needs organized. It USED to be, but then I brought SOME of the books to school, and the whole thing got messed up when I brought them back.

^The SECOND shelf in the book case. Once again, in need of organization.

^The TOP shelf of the book case. I have read ALL of the books in the book case. In case you were wondering.

And that concludes the pictoral tour of my books! Conclusions? It's POSSIBLE that I MAY have too many books. MAYBE I should sell some of them. But whenever I think of giving any of them up, I have a moment of panic. And what would I buy with the money I earned from selling them? MORE BOOKS, OF COURSE! It's what I ALWAYS do whenever I have any extra money. THUS, the large number of books. It's a VICIOUS CIRCLE, friends!

Well, that's all! I hope you're all good!

Reevaluating? This sucks!

Hello! This blog post is probably going to be pretty boring for everyone who is not me, but I'm really just trying to figure some things out for myself. So I'm writing about it...because that's what I do.

Ok, so for a pretty long time now, I've been SURE that I want to go into publishing. I've mostly wanted to be a literary agent. Everyone tells me that this is a TERRIBLE idea because the book is dying and whatever, but I have REFUSED to listen. I tell myself (and them) that they're wrong and that I can make it if I work hard enough. And honestly, I think that I could.

But I've been interning at my university's press. And it's really fun! I've learned loads, and everyone is really nice and they're MY KIND OF PEOPLE (book people). And we've had presentations from different people, and they've been really interesting and awesome and stuff. But then I look around. A university press is pretty much the MOST RELAXED publishing place you can find because they are funded by the university. Therefore, they don't have to worry AS MUCH about making profits. But they still have to worry about it because a board votes on if proposed books should be published. And even without the uber-stress of profits that the more commercial publishing houses have, the people at the press are pretty stressed. And then I read Daphne Unfeasible's (Maureen Johnson's agent) blog and tweets, and it seems like she is CONSTANTLY WORKING OR THINKING ABOUT HER JOB. Which is cool as long as you ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR JOB MORE THAN ANYTHING. But it seems like her job LITERALLY never stops. And I'm not sure that I want that for myself.

One reason is that I've never wanted to BE my job. Like, I don't want that to DEFINE me as a person...to define my worth and my thoughts and my everything. I mean, I obviously want to LOVE my job, but I don't want to BE my job. There's such a difference to me. I don't know if anyone else sees that distinction like I do, but the point is that I do.

Another reason is that I REALLY want to have a family. I've known for a really long time that I want to be a mother. I mean, I'm not going to pull a random guy of the street to marry and start a family with, but I do want kids a lot. Like, even if I never find the right guy for me (I don't plan on settling for a loser just because I want children), I would want to adopt or get pregnant or something. And I know that probably goes completely against everything feminist or whatever, but I really love kids and raising PEOPLE would make me so happy. I mean, even playing a small role in my cousins' growing up makes me really happy. But anyway, having kids and REALLY being a mother (like being there for my kids all the time) would be really hard if I decided to do publishing. I want to have time for my kids. A lot of time for my kids. I'm not saying that I don't want a job...I absolutely do. But I want to be able to put my kids first without jeopardizing my career, and I don't think I could do that in publishing.

Next, I don't know if I actually WANT to do publishing. Like I've had it in my head for so long, and lately I've been sort of stubbornly CLINGING to it. Like I keep with it because I don't want to quit and feel like a flake (or LOOK like a flake to all of the people that I've assured that I CAN DO IT). Even when I see that it's maybe not the career for me, I just sort of close my eyes and turn my head away (in my brain...like in my thoughts...it's complicated). And it's funny because it's the same thing that I've accused other people of doing, and I've been so upset with them. Like my friend who has ALWAYS said that she wants to be a doctor but would be THE PERFECT special ed teacher. But that's beside the point. The point is that I want to look at myself HONESTLY, not through the lense of what other people will think if I change my mind.

Finally, there's writing time to consider. I'm a sucky writer. I know this. But I discovered in November (while not finishing NaNoWriMo...but I will, seriously!) that I REALLY LOVE IT. And I want to have time for it in my future. And with working in publishing, I would have little or no time to do it. It's just a fact. And I want desperately to have time for it.

So I'm almost ready to admit that I don't want to do publishing. But I have several fears.

1) I fear the unknown. As in, I don't know what I would do if I DID NOT do publishing. I've been saying it for so long, and now I'm just going to GIVE IT UP? What will I DO? I mean, I've already started down that PATH. I'm double majoring in marketing and English. And I've pretty much only taken general education courses, but it would still be such a huge CHANGE. I would have to change majors and courses and advisors and plans and lists and what I want to be what I grow up. And I seriously hate change.

2) I think this is probably my biggest fear: I fear wasting my potential. This is going to sound SERIOUSLY CONCEITED, but I know that I'm smart. Like, I just am. I'm not a genius or anything, but I could pretty much succeed in going into whatever I wanted to go into. I mean, it sounds terrible to say (and I feel bad saying it), but I am smart. Some people are pretty or nice, and I am intelligent. So if I decide to do something LESS than what I CAN do, does that make me terrible? Does it mean that I'm letting myself down? Giving up on myself and my potential? Does it mean that I'm letting other people down? Oh, and this has always been a fear for me. Like when I decided that I did NOT want to be a doctor (that was my thing BACK IN THE DAY), I was so scared that I would be wasting my potential in not doing that. Like, I would be giving up saving someone potentially because I didn't think being a doctor would SUIT me. It just seemed really selfish. But then I convinced myself that healing people physically is not the ONLY way that you can help people.

3) I've already covered this a bit, but I'm afraid of what other people will think. Will my family and friends be disappointed? Will I be disappointed later in my life??

Ok, so with all this uncertainty, I think that I should list some things that I know. Just to sort of make up for this. So, things I know:

1) I want my job to put me around awesome books. I love books, and I would hate it if my job didn't include them somehow.

2) I want to INFLUENCE other people to read amazing books through my job. Whether it's getting a book published or marketing it or just recommending it to ONE PERSON, I want someone to get that feeling of reading ONE OF THE AWESOME ONES because of me. You know what I'm saying, right? There's that thing where you find one of those books that you know you'll love forever. You'll read it over and over because you CAN'T HELP IT. That is probably my favorite feeling in the world (finding one of those books). And I want to help other people to feel it as often as I can.

3) Already covered BUT I want a family, and I want to BE THERE for my family.

4) I want to feel useful. I hate it when no one needs me, you know? Like I'm not necessary. Whether it's not necessary that I'm working somewhere or it's not necessary for me to be alive...the first can feel like the second sometimes.

5) I want...NO NEED...to have a plan soon. Partly because being without one makes me feel SO LOST and partly because I am in college already. I don't have forever to decide on this like I did back in high school.

So there you have it! I am reevaluating my life, and here you are, privy to the details! Oh, and you might ask what I would consider INSTEAD of working at a publishing place. WELl, so far I have thought of either being a school librarian OR being a teacher. And I am open to suggestions, of course.

I am sorry for this! This probably should have been a journal entry, now that I think about it. But I've already typed it, so it's going up.

SPEECH!

Hello! So, tomorrow I have to make a SPEECH. In my SPEECH CLASS! Who would have thought that a speech class would mean making speeches??!?! Not me, apparently. I'm freaking out. But I told Possum (my Canadian twin) that I would post my outline for the speech as a blog, so that's what I'm doing.

Also, I would like to thank Possum for the SPIFFY PACKAGE that I received in the mail today! It seriously made my day not suck, DESPITE the speechage that will be happening tomorrow.

Now here's the outline:

OUTLINE FOR INFORMATIVE SPEECH
(Leah Moore, COM 110)
Cairo, Illinois

Purpose: To inform the audience about Cairo, Illinois.

Thesis: Cairo’s beginning and problems with racism contributed to the town’s present and future.

Organizational Pattern: Topical

I. Introduction

A. Attention Getter: Two years ago, my family and I drove through Cairo, Illinois on our way
to visit my older sister at college. Upon entering Cairo, we saw a bizarre mixture of impressive buildings interspersed with several buildings that were collapsing [VISUAL AID-7].
B. Relevance: Overconfidence, apathy, and discrimination can destroy a town, even one with enormous amounts of potential.
C. Credibility: Upon seeing Cairo, I researched the town’s past to see how it became the city it is today.
D. Thesis: Cairo’s beginning and problems with racism contributed to the town’s present and future.
E. Preview: Today I’ll cover the beginning of Cairo, its racial issues, and the city’s present and future.

Transition: We’ll start with the beginning of the city’s formation.

II. Body

A. Beginning
1. Cairo is pronounced by some as Carrow and by others as Cayrow. It was ambitiously named after Cairo in Egypt.
2. Cario is located at the southern tip of Illinois, where the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers meet. [VISUAL AID] Due to its location of the banks of the rivers, many thought that Cairo could be the United States’ most successful. This created a feeling of overconfidence in the people who settled there.
3. According to Lanz, the attempt to create the city of Cairo failed twice. Because of Cairo’s nearness to the rivers, the city was at major risk of floods. Levees needed to be built and low spots needed to be built up in order to allow the city itself to be built safely.
a. The investors were not prudent with their money and spent it all on impressive buildings rather than levees.
b. As a result of the failure of these men to build the city, the community suffered a severe decline.
1. The failures accentuated an atmosphere of lawlessness and apathy and contributed to the negative image of the city.
2. There was a feeling within the community that the city was doomed to failure.
4. Finally, a third company took over the town. The owners of that company cut corners in flood precautions which would later haunt the city when corporations refused to build there because of the dangers of floods and water seepage.

Transition: Now that we’ve discussed the problems at the beginning of Cairo’s formation, let’s move onto the problem that really destroyed the town: racism.
B. Cairo’s Problems with Racism
1. According to Ewing, in 1920, Cairo hit its peak population of over 15,000 people. By 1990, the population had dropped to 4700. In the intervening 70 years, the community was plagued by extreme racial problems [VISUAL AID].
2. Cairo had always been a Southern town in a Northern state. During the Civil War, community leaders actually considered seceding from Illinois and the Union.
3. However, after the war, many recently-freed slaves flocked to the North. Many got stuck in Cairo because they did not have the means to go farther. This did not sit well with the white members of the community. They’d left apathy behind, but they had replaced it with hatred. Blacks were heavily discriminated against in the years that followed, but they didn’t protest the unfair treatment much.
4. Until the summer of 1963, when a black soldier named Robert L. Hunt, Jr. died in a jail cell [VISUAL AID].
a. According to Perry, Hunt was pulled over for a broken taillight and arrested for disorderly conduct.
b. Police reported that Hunt committed suicide by hanging himself with his undershirt, but
1. Hunt’s companions on the night that he was arrested said that he was not wearing a shirt when he was taken into custody because it was a hot night.
2. Relatives who viewed the body claimed that Hunt was severely beaten
3. The coroner reported that there was no need for an autopsy, but he
resigned soon after the incident.
4. The police report disappeared.
5. A witness in a cell near Hunt’s was released and never seen again.
c. Hunt’s death sparked massive riots in Cairo [VISUAL AID].
5. In the years that followed, African Americans of Cairo were no longer passive. They protested segregation and unfair employment of whites over blacks. In Cairo during this time period, the economy was such that there were a limited number of jobs, so whites clung to their supposed superiority as the only way to remain employed.
6. In April of 1969, the African American community began a boycott of white businesses that they said would end when white business owners hired black workers. The boycott lasted over 2 years and ended because white owners went out of business and moved out of town. Not because they agreed to hire black workers.
7. In 1972, the U.S. Commission of Civil Rights held a hearing in Cairo. In the report of the hearing, several instances of segregation and discrimination. The testimony of high school students was particularly interesting to me. They all said that they had friends of different races, but those friendships ended at 3:30 when their parents picked them up from school. When asked what they planned to do after graduation, they all said that they would move out of Cairo, and they did not plan to return.

Transition: Now that we have an understanding of how Cairo was essentially destroyed, I’ll cover the town’s present and its future.

B. Cairo’s Present and Future
1. After the racism problems were resolved, the community slipped back into its former apathy.
2. [VISUAL AID] At present, Cairo is virtually a ghost town.
a. The first time we drove through Cairo, we did not see a single person.
b. The second time we drove through, we saw only one man, crossing the street
diagonally like something out of a zombie movie.
3. However, efforts to make a future for Cairo are being made.
a. In a TIME Magazine article from earlier this February, Smith writes about projects being taken on to bring new industry and interest to Cairo.
b. Also, the last time my family and I drove through Cairo, which was in January, some of the old, collapsing buildings downtown and been demolished to make way for new buildings to be built.

Transition: In this speech I have explored…..

III. Conclusion

A. Thesis/Summary: In this speech I have explored the beginning of Cairo, its problems with racism, and its present and future. We’ve seen that overconfidence, apathy, and discrimination can destroy a city.

B. Memorable Close: Hopefully Cairo’s future is brighter than its past. Hopefully Cairo can finally live up to its potential

I think the copy/paste activities messed up my spacing. But...just ignore that. If you can.

Ok, now I have to get to work on my bibliography! Bye!

Staying Awake

Hello!

I'm coming to you from CLASS. Yeah, I know. Shame on me for writing a blog mid-public writing class. But here's the thing: I got about four hours of sleep last night, and I will fall asleep if I don't do anything other than listening. And I am listening! She's talking about her chinless baby (no joke)!

I'm actually writing this down on paper right now. Presumably I'll type it and post it later. Obviously if you're reading this, the I expended the effort. (Wombat of the future says: I am! And it feels weird to be typing all of the things that I was thinking earlier today.)

So...there has been SNOW here lately. It started on Friday night, and it's still sort of sticking around. First it snowed. Then it sort of melted. Then it froze. This caused ICE. Lots of ice! VERY DANGEROUS ICE! They've cleared it all off of the roads but the sidewalks are TREACHEROUS (Update from Wombat of the Future: It's pretty much all melted now)! Over the weekend, I almost fell SEVERAL times. I was only saved by clutching Basmah (my roommate). And then yesterday I slipped and almost fell once. One problem that I have is that I MAJORLY OVERREACT whenever I start to slip. Seriously. My foot slides JUST A TINY BIT, and I windmill my arms and give an embarrassingly girlish squeal. This behavior is unlike me (particularly the squealing bit), but there's something about not being able to trust the ground. I'm used to putting my foot down and it pretty much staying where I want it to be. I like being able to trust what I'm standing and walking on. Another thing. My ice walk is REALLY WEIRD. It's this sort of bizarre duck-walk. I turn my feet way out because I seem to think that will help. I don't know why. And I take these really stiff, tiny steps like an old woman who's just had a hip replacement. Yeah, it's attractive. Still, it's better than falling on my butt and ACTUALLY having a hip replacement.

Anyway, I think the moral of this story is that ice is NOT GOOD. And also that they should've cancelled school yesterday. My sister's still in high school, and she had snow days Friday, yesterday, AND today. Ok, back to not being a good thing. Snow is good. Ice is not. Except when it forms these really pretty glass ball looking things on trees, which are illuminated by golden light at night. BUT THAT'S A DIFFERENT STORY (Message from future Wombat: one that I wrote down originally, but I didn't want to type it all out).

(This is all from future Wombat: I THOUGHT OF AN IDEA FOR MY INCOMPLETE NANO NOVEL!!! Yeah, I started NaNo but didn't finish. But I've been WANTING to finish it, especially because I never really got INTO the plot due to the fact that I didn't really HAVE an IDEA about what the plot should be. BUT NOW I HAVE SOMETHING! And I REALLY want to write it all down in the novel, but I DON'T HAVE TIME!!! Too much homework and school and interning.)

Speaking of interning, I think I'll do a blog about that soon. A day in the life of an intern or something. That could be fun.

Ok, that's it!

Best wishes!

Worries

Hello!

So, I am a worrier. No matter how hard I try, I cannot eliminate this facet of my character. Mostly, I worry about people. If I don't hear from them, then I worry. If I think they seem upset, then I worry. If I don't think they're doing the best thing for themselves, then I worry. Anyways, I bring all of this up because my friend Possum (aka my Canadian Twin) has been ABSENT from the Internet since MONDAY. For some people, this would not be at all unusual. For her, it is. So I went on THIS MASSIVE STALKING EXPEDITION. First, I checked all of her sites. Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Blogspot, Ning, etc. No word from her. So then I checked the websites for the news outlets around where she lives. And I was glad not to find anything there. AND THEN I checked her sister's facebook profile, which was updated with a status YESTERDAY! Which, I think, is promising. If some sort of tragedy had befallen the family, then surely Possum's sister wouldn't be posting a status update about her lack of cell phone charger. So I'm still worried, but I no longer have THAT WORRIED FEELING in my stomach. Now I'm just restless-worried.

That's right. There are different STAGES of worry from me. The first is just the casual "wonder what's going on there" thing. After that I progress to this restless "WHAT'S GOING ON??" stage. Following that stage is the GUT feeling. Not the gut feeling that I know something's wrong, but instead the gut feeling that I'm WORRIED that something is wrong. I really feel emotions in my stomach. Other people feel emotions in their stomach, right? I mean, that's not so odd! Or maybe it is. Anyways, I can't trust things like gut feelings or instincts because EVERY feeling is a gut feeling if the feeling is strong enough (for me). But yeah, my worry for Possum has downgraded to the restless worried stage. Which is really why I'm blogging. Because I feel restless, I mean.

SPEAKING OF WORRIES, I was PLANNING on going home this weekend, but now it's meant to snow! Meaning I cannot drive because living in the Southeaster US, you don't exactly get a lot of EXPERIENCE with the whole driving in the snow thing. So now I'm probably going to have to stay here at school all by myself. My roommate's going on a retreat for this leadership program that she's in. But, you know, it's cool. I'll just read and get ahead on my homework. Ok, I won't ACTUALLY get ahead on my homework, but I will PLAN on it, which is almost as good (not really). But the reading should be tons of fun! I haven't had a lot of time for pleasure reading this semester due to the fact that I've had tons of reading for class to do. I did read a Sarah Dessen book last week though. Keeping the Moon. I really like the story, but I hate the cover! It's really awkward. It has this GIRL on it, but it only shows her shorts! SERIOUSLY. The front of her shorts and some leg and some stomach (bare, of course). Is that meant to help the book sell?? Because I'm pretty sure the only people who read Sarah Dessen are girls (for the most part), and I'm PRETTY POSITIVE that that image won't ENTICE them to read the book. Actually, now that I think about it, the covers are the reasons that I resisted Dessen for so long. I know, I know...judging a book by it's cover. But I do that! Anyways, Possum convinced me to read one, and I'm glad that I did! And now we're back to Possum. *sighs* *worries* *wrings hands*

Ok, I think that's all that I'm going too write for now! Woot! Second blog on this site! How exciting.

Best wishes!

First Blog

Hello!

That title is misleading because I HAVE blogged before. Just not on here.

Anyways, I'll probably talk a lot about classes, an internship that I have right now, books, and random stuff that just sort of pops up in my life. Oh, and I'll dither a lot about what to write about even though I should just wait to blog until I actually have an idea about what to write about.

Ok, I'll end this now! I just wanted to do a really short introduction thing for now. I'll explain other things as I go, I guess.
